The Bible Didn't Mention Us by carlotta-guidicelli The Bible Didn't Mention Us by carlotta-guidicelli
I'm still trying to figure out how to put "soul" into my pencil drawings, especially portraits...There's usually something so impersonal about my graphite portraits. So I guess I tried something rougher. Although, I'm not sure if it just comes across as lazy?

I was going to paint on top of this, but I accidentally got too into the pencil shading, haha. So I may just leave it as it is.

Based on/shamelessly referenced from this amazing, amazing song right here: [link] I've been listening to too much of Regina Spektor recently. I really, really, really wanted to do her justice here, but...I dunno.

I just used a normal mechanical pencil (HB) here.

soooo stunning! Love the pencil 'hatching' technique you used wit the strokes all going pretty much the same way.
The expression you gave her is magical :)

Stunning work. Love the use of pencil marks to create gradation. And it doesn't look lazy at all! I think it gave it just the feeling of character that you wanted. =D

amazing you only used a normal mechanical pencil here. From the thumbnail I would have thought you used some charcoal. This is very cool looking with the unblended strokes. As for your concern of putting soul into your drawings…to me it looked like you have. I don't know what you specify as the soul, I consider myself putting my soul into the drawing is when I bring out the subject's personality through the pencil or my own emotion about the subject. If that makes sense. Regardless, I'm loving the unblended strokes.

I love how you made her skin smoother than her hair or clothes.

I think you caught her beautifully.
I can see the softness of her lips and the gentleness of her eyes, the delicate look she has when she sings Samson - I really like this portrait.

I'd say you succeeded in putting some soul into this - I love the way the shading just squiggles to a halt. It's always tempting to shade and blend a drawing to death but sometimes the simpler the better. The face has loads of depth, so it certainly doesn't look lazy.

This is darling. It immediately became one of my favorite works. She looks as though she is just...about...to breathe the next note. Marvelous.

:D I like the contrast in shading for the clothing because its more like the clothings texture. And it looks ok on the hair but I think the picture would look better if the hair had a third type of shading just to make it softer (like a middle between the rough clothing and soft skin, so that the hair dosen't come off as the same texture as the cloth)
