Concert in the Sky

Description

A girl, her cat, and a concert in the sky :) If I had a little piece of heaven, this would be it.

This is supposed to be a self portrait. Apparently you can't see 'me' in my art (not literally). Like, you can see what I can do, but don't know anything about me as a person. That is the critique I get now. It used to be stuff like, "The eyes are too big, not enough contrast here." I still get crit like that, but most of the time I hear, "Where are you in this? What are you trying to say with this piece of art?"

I can do well with structure and technique, but when it comes to abstract ideas I'm completely at a loss. I have seriously no idea of how to put myself into my work.

But I've got to try, because the people that gave me this advice are the same people that will be deciding whether I get in to their art schools or not :P So, I thought this would be an easy start: Drawing stuff I like. I'm sitting on a cloud, chillling with my cat, and listening to Frank Sinatra sing while Fred and Ginger dance :D

This was inspired by Sinatra's "Come Fly With Me" and Annie Little's "Fly Me Away". I dunno, but I've been obsessed with songs about flying recently.

I don't know if I like this or not yet...I can't tell.

It's very lovely, and I think you should like it. I see a lot of you in here. Mind if I rant here, which may explain my "criticism"?

Whoever told you being you in a piece is correct, and I wished I've learned that lesson earlier. They don't literally mean you (who wants to draw themselves all the time, seriously? I'm a very boring person!), but they do mean your soul, if that doesn't sound cheesy enough.

You can't fake passion or any feeling that requires concentration. You are either an interpreter or an actor, and they are totally 2 distinct things. Actors pretend. Interpreters show.

A lot of photorealistic people act. They don't interpret.

You can relax to show passion, but you can't fake it (not trying to say you do).

What I believe you did this with this piece was relax a lot more than you do with your other pieces, and it defiantly shows. You have the skills, and now this piece shows that you have skill AND passion.

This is how I know you'll act succeed as an artist, at least respect-wise: a lot of people would draw photorealism, thinking it's the highest point, so they pretty much...stop. People think photorealism is the stopping point. It can be the stopping point, skill-wise, but it doesn't mean it's the stopping point feeling wise.

In all, I personally don't believe you need to literally be you in a piece, but metaphorically in the piece. You don't have to be that person, but you need to be able to sympathize.

I'm sorry this sounds so incredibly cheesy and biased, but it's something I learned new, and it helped me a lot with writing :)
